"Although I personally mostly photograph nature, I am sometimes distracted by the colours, shapes and textures found in nature or urban areas. During a visit to Astoria, Oregon, I lost track of time as I tried to capture shades of yellow on the siding of an old building."

In EVENT 51/3, poet Brandi Bird writes about the struggle of the blank page.

"Today, I'm controlled by fear.

I try to fight against fear every single day, but it wins most of the time. I know that writing is an exercise in fighting that fear. That the blank page is a place I can theoretically be whoever I want to, brave or petulant or resilient. The possibilities of exploration are endless. But mostly I'm just scared to start."

"I love it when a poem, even a short one, can provoke a belly laugh and also break your heart. I don’t think a poem needs to choose to be either serious or playful. It can be both, just like a walk across Philadelphia can be both. I like poems that contain unreconciled contradictions. The poem doesn’t need to make up its mind. It can think right in front of us. It can not know. Or it can know and not tell us."

Join us in welcoming EVENT's new Managing Editor, Krista Eide! Krista is taking over for Ian Cockfield, who has been a part of EVENT’s editorial staff for over 20 years.
ㅤ
Krista brings with her a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this position. She was the former Executive Editor of @prisminternational and has already worked as a first reader and editorial assistant for EVENT. Her creative writing, including both fiction and non-fiction, has been featured in various Canadian journals and publications. Krista also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia.
