Read Vicki McLeod's 2nd place 2021 Non-Fiction con Read Vicki McLeod's 2nd place 2021 Non-Fiction contest winner, which documents her late father's life through letters he wrote from Riverview, EVENT 51/1.

"In later times, standing by the river, conjuring the feel of that bright grass on my summer child's feet, I consider all the dreams that flowed down that river from there to here. Dreams with no inkling of their origins in those resplendent mountains. I imagine you sitting and smoking in a crooked lawn chair at dusk, one long leg folded over another, watching the flowers grow and admiring the lawn. Gazing across to the river. Thinking of the things you might have done."

On a day like today
I spent all day
daydreaming, napping
and reading
as if cocooned in
my paralysis."

"This was taken on board the ferry that runs between Coupeville and Port Townsend in the summer of 2019 en route to various points on the Olympic Peninsula in the US. I always enjoy ferry rides, and the Washington state ferries are very 'old school' in that the design leans towards the functional, the colour scheme is an institutional green and white, and food options are 'cafeteria basic' if at all. They are seen as vessels serving the highway system. It stands in stark contrast to the corporate upsell of BC Ferries and they are a lot cheaper. So I supposed there is an element of nostalgia here. The figures on the deck bookend the scene nicely."

What might I have grown into? How exactly does one grieve the unknown? I was 15 and standing on the precipice of becoming, about to leap. And then, suddenly, his hand caught my ankle and pulled me deep down, far away from myself and the world, and now I will never know who I would have been without this trauma."
